Covid-19 : Infected persons in Colombo District nearing 6,000

The total number of Covid-19 infections registered in the Colombo District since 4 October has escalated to 5,899 with the 231 fresh cases discovered on Monday (16), the National Operation Centre for Prevention of Covid-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) said.

The Gampaha District has recorded 4,998 infections during this period, including the 42 new cases from Monday.

Sri Lanka detected 387 new Covid-19 patients on Monday as the confirmed case count went up to 17,674. Reports revealed that 382 of them were from the Minuwangoda-Peliyagoda cluster and the remaining five were arrivals from Uganda and Turkey.

Eight police officers, five Special Task Force (STF) officers, 51 at the Bogambara Prison, and one person at the Welikada Prison were also among the latest coronavirus cases reported on Monday, according to the NOCPCO.

As of last morning (17), Health Ministry’s data showed that 11,806 patients had regained health so far while 5,807 were still under medical care at selected hospitals and treatment centres across the island.

The death toll from Covid-19 meanwhile reached 61 on Monday after three persons, aged between 70-85 years, fell victim to the virus.

The NOCPCO also mentioned that nearly 30,000 first and second contacts of the new Covid-19 patients were placed under self-isolation.
