Trump releases CCTV footage and suspect photo after gunfire at Correspondents’ Dinner
US President Donald Trump says he has released CCTV footage and a photo of the suspect in custody following the gunfire incident that disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington.
Trump said the footage appears to show the start of the shooting and that he shared the material on social media “in the interest of transparency.”
The President was earlier evacuated from the event after gunfire erupted near the venue’s security screening area, causing panic among guests and prompting a major security response.
According to the United States Secret Service, Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and all protected officials were unharmed. One suspect was taken into custody following the incident.
Trump also said a Secret Service officer was shot from close range, but was saved by a bullet-proof vest. He added that he had spoken with the officer, who was in high spirits.
The annual dinner, held at the Washington Hilton, is one of the most high-profile gatherings in the US political and media calendar. Authorities are continuing investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
