Duminda, Premalal to be moved to separate ward of Prison hospital due to Covid fears
The Department of Prisons is considering utilizing the Welikada Prison hospital to treat prison inmates infected with the coronavirus, the Aruna newspaper reported.
Commissioner of Prisons Administration/Rehabilitation and Skill Development Chandana Ekanayake said measures are being taken to transfer 112 inmates, from nearly 150 infected prisoners under treatment, to the Mahara prison.
He said that the group including former Parliamentarian Duminda Silva and MP Premalal Jayasekera who are currently receiving treatment at the prison hospital have been moved to a separate ward on the advise of the prison doctor.
The total number of prison inmates infected with the coronavirus at the Welikada prison increased to 107, after the detection of three more patients yesterday.
