'This Is a Fight for Workers and Consumers' - CEB Trade Unions on Sick Leave

Employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) continued their trade union action by reporting sick leave en masse, marking the second phase of their protest citing 24 demands, including a call for proper restructuring of the CEB.

The unions began their “work-to-rule” campaign on September 4, and escalated the action yesterday with over 10,000 employees reporting sick leave.

According to union representatives, today the remaining 50% of the 21,800-strong workforce joined the protest.

Among the key demands are:

-Ensuring no reduction in financial or non-financial benefits for employees under the new Electricity Act
-Addressing the Rs. 25.06 billion deficit in the employee pension fund before the stipulated deadline
-Guaranteeing all trade union rights under the Labour Law

Despite the protest, many employees and officers were seen reporting to work, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
