Two CID Teams Tasked with Investigating Protest Linked to Ranil Case

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has commenced a formal inquiry into the disorderly conduct that occurred outside the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court during the hearing of a complaint against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The incident, which took place on the evening Wickremesinghe was presented before court, involved a group of individuals who allegedly obstructed access to the court premises and behaved in a disruptive manner.

In response, the Fort Magistrate, Nilupuli Lankapura, issued a directive to the CID to identify and apprehend those responsible for organizing and inciting the gathering.

Two dedicated investigation teams have been appointed to carry out the probe.

The CID confirmed that the inquiry will also extend to individuals who shared footage of the incident on social media platforms, as part of efforts to trace and verify those involved.

The court emphasized that the gathering not only disrupted judicial proceedings but also potentially violated provisions under the Contempt of Court Act. Accordingly, the CID has been instructed to take immediate legal action against the organizers and participants once identified.
