Rising Underage Pregnancies Linked to Early Romantic Relationships and Lack of Sexual Education, Says Police
The Police Children and Women's Bureau has reported a rise in underage pregnancies in the country.
Deputy Inspector General Renuka Jayasundara revealed that 213 such incidents have been documented so far this year.
She emphasized that romantic relationships among girls under the age of 16 have played a role in this increase in pregnancies.
She pointed out that many of these pregnancies are a result of sexual assaults occurring within these romantic relationships.
She further highlighted that the underlying causes of these pregnancies include sexual activity that arises from such young relationships, as well as a lack of proper protection and insufficient knowledge about sexual health and conduct.
