Dengue numbers decrease as COVID numbers increase
The National Dengue Control Unit stated that the lowest number of dengue patients after 5 years was reported in 2020, which is a 70% decrease in comparison with 2019.
The Director of the Dengue Control Unit Dr. Aruna Jayasekara stated that the number of dengue patients was reduced due to the effects of the coronavirus.
This is due to the fact that during the period when the country was closed, as well as due to the coronavirus, the movement of people was reduced.
In 2020, 31,084 COVID patients were reported and in 2019 the number of dengue patients was 105,049.
So far in in this year, 2,362 dengue patients were reported and the majority of them, which is 1,441 patients were reported from the Batticaloa district.
From the Colombo District, 187 patients were reported, while 111 patients were reported from the Gampaha District
