Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th Birth Anniversary marked

The Consulate General of India, Hambantota commemorated 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with a series of events this year.

The inaugural event, the Galle District Inter-School Painting Competition was held on September 28 at Galle Siridhamma College. About 30 students from schools in the Galle, Udugama, Ambanlangoda and Elpitiya Education Zones participated.

Trophies were awarded to the winners by the Consul General P.R. Dipin, Siridhamma College Principal Ravindra Pushpakumara and Vice Consul Atul Aggarwal.

Saplings were planted in the Moneragala District by the Moneragala Pradeshiya Sabha, Sri Gawry Tamil Vidyalaya and Kumbukkana Pragnaloka Vidyalaya Environmental Society.

A film was screened on the same day at Sri Gawry Tamil Vidyalaya. The same movie was screened on October 3 in Wellachci Kade, Maduruketiya.

The Gandhi Jayanthi was held at Mahinda College, Galle where Mahatma Gandhi visited in 1927 during his journey to Sri Lanka. The Consul General garlanded the Gandhi statue and launched a book along with Principal Gamini Jayawardena containing students’ articles, paintings and poems.
