Discussions to increase local milk production

The Ministry of Agriculture states that discussions have commenced with three major plantation companies to set up large-scale farms to increase local milk production.

Accordingly, the Ministry stated that the plantation companies have agreed to bring in 4,500 cows to produce 100,000 litres of milk per day within three years.

Domestic milk production is about 40% and the government spends Rs. 55 billion annually on the importation of powdered milk.

According to the available data, the milk yield per cow can be 2.5 litres per day and it is expected to increase it to five litres under the new program.
