Cabinet grants approval to take necessary action to increase estate workers' minimum wage

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to the resolution tabled by the Minister of Labour to take necessary steps to increase the minimum wage of estate workers to Rs. 1,000.

Currently, estate workers are eligible for a daily wage of Rs. 750 including a fixed price allowance of Rs. 50 and another allowance of named over kilo rate if the fixed weight in kilograms exceeds related to productivity.

Following the 2020 budget proposal, several rounds of discussions were held with Ceylon Employers’ Association representing the estate owners’ association, where they agreed to increase the minimum daily wage to Rs. 920.
