Public servants requested wear locally-made apparel one day of the week

The State Minister of Batik, Handloom and Local Apparel Products has requested the public servants to wear locally-made apparel on one day of the week.

At present, the subject State Ministry has implemented a series of parallel national programmes.

Taking this forward, Batik, Handloom and Local Apparel Products State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara stated that in 2021 public sector employees are requested to report to work wearing locally-made apparel on one day of the week.

Reportedly, a regulation in this regard was sent to the relevant Ministries, Departments and Corporations regarding the design of the garments in writing.

By implementing this programme, they seek to address a number of issues, particularly the protection of local apparel manufacturers, the creation of new jobs locally in the garment sector, and the cessation of large inflows of foreign exchange for garments overseas annually.
