CID and intelligence unit join investigation into stolen explosives from Mawanella quarry

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the State Intelligence Service (SIS) have joined an investigation launched into the theft of a stock of explosives from a rock quarry in Mawanella.

An initial investigation was launched by the Mawanella Police and teams operating under the Sabaragamuwa Province Senior DIG following a complaint lodged by the owner of the quarry.

According to the Sunday Times, the owner of the quarry at Molliyagoda in Mawanella had filed a complaint on Tuesday (22) about the alleged theft of the explosives.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that a person or group of persons had broken into the storeroom of the quarry where the explosives had been stored in boxes and had made off with them.

The Police said 15 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, 750 grams of water-gel explosive, 20 detonators, and 35 metres of detonator cord were among the missing explosives.

The Mawanella Police have recorded statements from 30 people, including workers at the quarry and area residents, while no arrests have been made thus far.
