16th anniversary of Asian tsunami today

Sri Lanka and other countries in the region today (26) mark the 16th anniversary of the Asian tsunami.

The public is requested to observe a two-minute silence from 9.25 am to remember those who lost their lives in the tsunami.

On December 26, 2004, the world's deadliest tsunami killed over 230,000 people in 14 different countries.

The tsunami was a result of a megathrust 9.1 earthquake with the epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
