Global Covid-19 death tops 1.6 million mark
The global death toll from the Covid-19 virus has topped the 1.6 million mark to stand at 1,600,147.
A total of 12,079 fatalities were reported within the past 24 hours.
The US has the highest deaths of 302,605.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization says almost one billion doses of leading Covid-19 vaccine candidates had been secured as part of the COVAX programme to provide vaccines for low- and middle-income countries
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a Geneva press conference that 189 countries were participating in the programme.
