Empower police to detain terrorism suspects - Ajith Rohana

Police media spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana suggests that a deputy inspector general of police should be empowered to issue the order to detain a terrorism suspect without depending on the judiciary.

He was testifying yesterday (28) for the third day before the presidential commission that investigates the Easter Sunday attacks.

DIG Rohana also stressed the need to introduce an act pertaining to the intelligence sectors.

Being a member of the committee that formulated the antiterrorism act, he was summoned before the commission to obtain a clarification with regard to the legal provisions against terrorism and religious extremism.

According to him, terrorism suspects needed to be detained by the police for at least six months for interrogation.
